Ups and Downs

Back in 1976 I enjoyed the climbs and loved the downhills. Now with a fully loaded bicycle, I still love the downhills but the climbs are taking a toll on me both physically and mentally. The Spoke’n Hostel in Mitchell was wonderful and the guys were so encouraging. Yes, I was the only female cyclist there and the oldest person. Next morning started out with a long climb. I only made it about two miles before calling the hostel for a “rescue”. One of the owners “J” immediately came with her truck and took me to the top. I only had to walk two more times that day and not for very long distances. The rest of that day’s ride consisted of long runs down through the canyon and I was grinning the whole way until I got close to the bottom and I had to pedal in order to keep going down. There is a scientific explanation as to why the wind will blow up through the canyon. On the bright side, guess I can thank the wind for saving the wear and tear on my brakes.
