How to Avoid or Not Avoid Midwest Storms
I should have paid more attention to the storm clouds then the merry-go-round in Taylor, North Dakota. They were a sign of things to come. My Warmshowers hosts for the night invited me to spend a second day with them based on the weather reports. We spent a small portion of that evening in the basement because of the warnings. I also got a second serving of Sasha’s borscht that was delicious. I might even be tempted to bike that portion again just to have another taste.
My storm encounters were not over. I spent the next night in a motel and was glad I had made that decision as the hail came down. The next day I tried to outrun a morning thunderstorm. It didn’t work and I startled an elderly couple as I rang their doorbell and begged to be let in. Thankfully they too could hear the thunder and see the lightning bolts and opened the door . A few days later I was hiding out in the ladies room at a campground in Hazelton with my bike and gear all around me. I’m mentioning this town because with a population of barely over 200, they maintain a clean, beautiful campground, the best I’ve encountered so far on this trip. I don’t think there is anything they could do to make it better.
